Why Uncertified Timber Gets Cargo Rejected

Wood packaging material can carry pests and pathogens between ecosystems — bark beetles, wood-boring insects, and fungal spores are the main concern. ISPM-15 requires raw wood to be either heat-treated (56°C core temperature for 30 minutes) or fumigated, then stamped with the official IPPC mark showing the treatment code and country of origin. Customs inspectors at destination ports check for this stamp specifically; its absence is one of the most common — and entirely avoidable — reasons a shipment gets held at the border.
